Once a month, in a Bushwick Store front gallery a meeting occurs between some of New York Cities most talented people. This event is called Paint and Poetry. Paint and Poetry was created by Mojo Disco. He felt the need to create an event that wasn’t just about a Saturday Night Turn Up, but a place where our generation could showcase the true essence of our worth and become free.
Although Mojo is the creator, the hosts of the showcase are the very talented Scott Morris and Fox Gold. Together they MC a line up of poets, Emcees, and singers. Throw in the illest DJs spinning during intermission and it’s a win-win situation. But it doesn’t stop there, the walls are lined floor to ceiling with art work from the most talented artist in New York that call New York home (including me! shameless promo).
With the issues of gentrification, poverty, police brutality, and racism being realities many of us endure on a daily basics, events like Paint and Poetry give us the opportunity to express our frustrations through art and showcase them in a judgement-free environment.
Mojo admits every event comes with a challenge, but the free expression he sees in his peers makes all the chaos worth it.
“We are a harmonious blend of Ratchet and Righteous!”
It wouldn’t be out of place to see a nude female being body painted during the showcase, or someone in the back giving massages with a tattoo artist ready to give you new ink while you vibe out to the spoken words. Whatever makes you feel free to express yourself, I can almost guarantee you’ll find it at Paint and Poetry.
Paint and Poetry is a safe space for expression, discussion, and motivation.
My personal advice, check out the #paintandpoetry tag on Instagram, your eyes will surely be pleased.
